Track 02 · Filmmaking in 2026 · Lesson 6 of 35 · 10 min
How films get made in 2026
Shoot, generate or both: deciding shot by shot, and where the human work still is.
- Where
- Shot List
- Cost
- Free
In 2026 the question for each shot is no longer "can we afford to shoot this?" but "what's the best way to get this shot?" A film can mix footage from a camera, generated shots and generated fixes to real footage, and most good ones are deliberate about which is which.
Decide per shot
| Get it by | When it's the right call |
|---|---|
| Shooting | Long dialogue, real places and people, anything that must be exactly true |
| Generating | Establishing shots, inserts, impossible camera moves, places you can't get to, pickups |
| Fixing | A good take with one problem: an object to remove, a line to correct, a clip that's a beat short |
Generation is weakest where audiences look hardest: long spoken lines, readable text on screen and the same face over many shots. Plan around that: keep generated lines short (see "Dialogue that lands"), add text in the edit, and lock characters with references (see "Keep characters consistent").
Where the human work is
AI has moved effort around rather than removed it. The work that decides whether a film is good is the same as ever:
- Story and script. What happens and why it matters.
- Choices. Which shot, which take, where to cut.
- Performance and consent. Real people, or likenesses used with permission.
These are also what the law and the industry look for when they ask who made a film (see the later lessons in this track). Keep your hands on them, and keep a record that you did.
In MoviePro
Mark each row of your shot list with how you'll get it, using its Notes. Shot rows go to Generate shots; real footage you import in the editor's media browser and cut on the same timeline.
