Awards bodies don't ban AI tools, but they now ask how a film was made and who made it.

The Oscars (99th Awards, films released in 2026)

The Academy's rules for the 99th Oscars, approved in May 2026, cover films with a qualifying release between January 1 and December 31, 2026. On AI:

  • Generative AI may be used, but the Academy reserves the right to request more information about the nature of the use and human authorship.
  • Writing: screenplays must be human-authored to be eligible.
  • Acting: only roles credited in the film's billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent are eligible.

A short film still has to run 40 minutes or less, including credits.

Festivals

Festivals set their own rules on AI and on length, and they change year to year. Read the current submission rules for each festival before you submit, and answer any AI question on the form honestly.

Keep a record of how you made it

If you're asked, it helps to show your work. MoviePro keeps most of it for you:

  • Script versions (Script Editor → Versions) show the screenplay developing in your hands.
  • AI History lists every generation with its prompt and model.
  • Version History in the editor keeps snapshots of the cut.

Before submitting, export the script as a PDF and save a snapshot of the final cut, with a note of which shots were generated.
